Minolta made 200mm lenses in a variety of f-stops:
It's like they just couldn't make up their mind. The f5.0 and f4.5 versions were always designed for the cost-conscious. The f3.5 and f2.8 are often more than most want to spend. From the earliest days, Minolta made 200mm lenses targeting the lower-priced market. Initially, these appeared with a f5.0 optic, but later evolved into a f4.5 lens. These should not be construed as lower quality lenses just because they are lower priced. Like the 28mm f3.5 lenses, the 200mm f4.5 and f5.0 lenses were designed to cut cost, not quality -- but they also cut size and weight.
The competition
There are several 200mm f4.5 lenses you can choose from. All of them are designed as budget lenses, and the results are strictly third-class.

Making its appearance at the end of 1964, this is a much less expensive alternative to the 200 f3.5 Auto-Rokkor becasue of its slower aperture and a preset design. Small, lightweight, and easy to use. The f-stops will not appear in camera viewfinders because they are in the middle of the lens barrel. It's a quality shooter as you can see above. |

A updated version of the Tele Rokkor 200mm f5, with a slightly wider aperture, and an automatic diaphragm. As a result, it added a stop-down button, but kept the 52mm filter thread. |

An updated version of the MC Rokkor 200mm 4.5 with the improved cosmetics and lenses coating of the MC Rokkor-X series. The early version kept the stop-down button, but both used the wider 55mm filter thread. This was the last 200mm f4.5. At this point, Minolta decided to move to a new slightly faster 200mm f4.0 lens. |

A less expensive version of the MC Rokkor-X 200mm 4.5, this 1975 Celtic version replaced the 1974 Celtic 200mm f4.0 -- and was later itself replaced in 1977 with another Celtic, and MD 200mm f4.0. I know, it gets a little crazy. |
