MINOLTA 200mm f4.0 LENSES
Minolta made 200mm lenses in a variety of f-stops:
It's like the couldn't make up their mind. The f5.0 and f4.5 versions were always designed for the cost-conscious. The f3.5 and f2.8 are often more than most want to spend. The f4.0 was different. It was originally designed as a fairly fast version, but over time it gradually evolved into a budget version. These should not be construed as lower quality lenses just because they are lower priced. Like the 28mm f3.5 lenses, the 200mm f4.0 lenses were designed to cut cost, not quality, and are plenty fast enough for most situations.
The competition
There are a few alternative 200mm lenses with a f4.0 aperture. Most are quality shooters, but they can be hard to find. The Osawa (which made lenses for Mamiya) 200mm f4.0 is a fine choice, and Sigma made a couple of nice 200mm lenses as well.

In december of 1975, Minolta decided to replace its 200mm f4.5 lens with a faster 200mm f4.0. And it had all the features of the new Minolta line-up of the MC Rokkor-X series. |

A less expensive alternative to the MC Rokkor-X 200mm 4.0 (above), but with a difference. Most Celtic lenses were optically the same as their Rokkor brothers, but this Celtic has one more element than the Rokkor-X f4.0 model (above). It is also slightly heavier and longer, as a result. Stranger things have happened! |
