Minolta's Flash Units
Unlike many camera makers, Minolta made a lot of flash units over the
years. Most will fit, or at least work, with most cameras, but many
were designed with specific cameras in mind. For example the Duo Fit
S is small and not too powerful because it was designed for the 16mm line
of cameras. Electronic flash units ending in X were designed for the
XD and XG (and later) cameras. While they will work on older cameras,
not all of their features will be available. Electronic flash units
ending in PX were designed to provide TTL exposures with cameras such as
the X-700 and X-570. While they will work on older cameras, not all
of their features will be available.

Electronic Flash Units
Minolta's electronic flash units were mostly called
"Electroflashs".
Electroflash -- this was the original. It
is a manual only unit which can take AC power or batteries -- four AA. It
is also versatile because it has a built-in PC cord, and can be set vertically
or horizontally. Its rotating calculator handles film speeds from 25-800,
and f-stops from f1.4-22. It has a cold shoe, and a GN of 56 in feet
with ISO 100 speed film.
Electroflash 2 -- a compact, manual unit using 4 AA
batteries and providing a GN of 45 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It has
a hot shoe and a PC connection.
Electroflash 3 -- a compact, manual unit using 2 AA
batteries and providing a GN of 45 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It is
a hot shoe only unit, and designed for the 200 series of Autopaks, but usable
on any hot shoe camera.
Electroflash P -- a compact, manual unit using 2 AA
batteries and providing a GN of 45 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It is
a hot shoe only unit, and designed for the 200 series of Autopaks, but usable
on any hot shoe camera.
Electroflash S -- a compact, manual unit using 4 AA
batteries and providing a GN of 56 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It has
a hot shoe and a PC connection. It has a ready light, test button and calculator.
It handles film speeds from 25 to 800. The flash is wide enough to cover
a 35mm wide-angle lens.
Electroflash C -- a compact, manual unit using 2 AA
batteries. It was designed for the Minolta AF-C auto-focusing camera
(an unusual Minolta AF camera that lacked a flash) -- the contacts
are suitable ONLY for the AF-C camera.
Electroflash CP -- It's a compact "P" using 2 AA
batteries, but with a hot shoe and PC socket. GN of 50 in feet with
ISO 100 speed film. Its table handles film speeds from 25 to 400.
Electroflash CLE -- Designed to match perfectly with
the CLE camera -- mechanically, electronically, and aesthetically. While
it has a hot shoe and will work with any hot shoe camera, it is designed
for the TTL auto flash use with the CLE camera. It has a rather unique
scale on the back that displays the distance ranges for all the f-stops of
the CLE lenses.
Electroflash 14 -- a compact, manual unit using 2 AA batteries
Electroflash 20 -- a compact (1" x 2.5" x 2.5"), lightweight (3 oz.), manual
unit using 2 AA batteries and providing a quite substantial GN of 66 in feet
with ISO 100 speed film. It is a hot shoe only unit, but it has a rotating
computer on the back (ISO 25 to 400) as well as a ready light/test button.
It's perfect for subminis (or small 35mms) that have a hot shoe, such
as the MG-s. With ISO 400 film, at f2.0 you can correctly expose at
60 feet!
Auto Electroflash 22 -- This is a very compact unit that features both manual
and automatic exposure. It is 1.4 inches wide, 2.75 inches deep and 3.5 inches
tall, weighting in at only 5 ounces. As a result, it is not that powerful,
but it is a perfect match for smaller cameras. It has a GN of 74 in feet
with ISO 100 speed film. It sports one auto-exposure mode with a working
range up to 13 feet at f5.6 with ISO 100 speed film. It uses four
non-rechargeable AA batteries, and that is the only possible power source.
The flash is wide enough to cover a 35mm wide-angle lens. It has a hot shoe,
but comes with a detachable PC cord. It has a ready light, test button and
calculator. It handles film speeds from 25 to 800.
Auto Electroflash 25 -- a compact unit having manual and auto-exposure modes,
using 4 AA batteries and providing a GN of 82 in feet with ISO 100 speed
film. It has a hot shoe and a PC connection. Often sold in a kit with the
Pocket Autopak 200, Pocket Autopak 230, Pocket Autopak 250, Pocket Autopak
270, and other small cameras.
Auto Electroflash 28 -- This is the older brother of the Electroflash 25
and the younger brother of the Electroflash 128. It is a manual and auto-exposure
unit using 4 AA batteries or AC power. It providing a GN of 92 in feet with
ISO 100 speed film. It sports one auto-exposure mode with a working range
up to 16 feet at f5.6 with ISO 100 speed film. It has a hot shoe and a PC
connection for a detachable PC cord. The unit head is titlable up to
90 degrees for bounce-flash use. The flash is wide enough to cover a 35mm
wide-angle lens, but an accessory wide-angle panel was available for use
down to a 28mm lens. It has a ready light, test button and calculator. It
handles film speeds from 25 to 400.
Auto Electroflash 30FX -- A small, light flash offering manual and auto-exposure
modes, and using 2 AA batteries. It provides a GN of 60 in feet with
ISO 100 speed film. It is a hot shoe only flash. It has two auto modes
-- one for ISO 100 and one for ISO 400. Accepts a wide-angle panel
for use with 28mm lenses.
Auto Electroflash 32 -- a manual and auto-exposure unit using 4 AA batteries
and providing a GN of 104 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It has a hot shoe
and a PC connection.
Auto Electroflash Macro 80PX -- A ring light for close-up and macro work.
Designed to provide TTL exposures with cameras such as the X-700 and
X-570, the unit will additionally set the camera to the synch speed . Some
find this a neat convenience feature. Others have problems because slower
shutters cannot be selected. In fact, they can be selected, but it takes
a bit of work because you need to place tape on the secondary hot shoe contact.
On the XD, XG, and later cameras causes an LED to blink in the viewfinder
when the flash is "ready". A manual and auto-exposure unit using 4 AA batteries
and providing a GN of 26 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It has a hot shoe
and a PC connection.
Auto Electroflash 118X -- Designed for the XD and XG (and later) cameras,
the unit will automatically set these cameras to the synch speed. Some find
this a neat convenience feature. Others have problems because slower shutters
cannot be selected. In fact, they can be selected, but it takes a bit of
work because you need to place tape on the secondary hot shoe contact. On
the XD, XG, and later cameras the 118X causes an LED to blink in the viewfinder
when the flash is "ready". It offers and manual exposure mode and two, sort
of, auto-exposure modes. This is a very compact unit measuring only 2 inches
by 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches, and weighting only 4.5 ounces. As a result,
it is not that powerful, but it is a perfect match for occasional use.
It uses any type of a pair of AA batteries and has a GN of 60 in feet
with ISO 100 speed film. It sports one auto-exposure mode with a working
range up to 15 feet at f4.0 with ISO 100 speed film. It has a second scale,
with a greater distance, for use with ISO 400 film. It is a hot shoe
only unit, so it is not usable on cold shoe cameras without a PC-to-hot shoe
adapter. The flash is wide enough to cover a 35mm wide-angle lens, but an
accessory wide-angle panel was available for use down to a 28mm lens. It
has a ready light, test button and calculator. It handles film speeds from
25 to 400, but only ISO 100 and 400 in auto mode. Even though it is designed
for cameras that accept autowinders, because it is a non-thyristor flash,
it cannot keep up with a camera when it is using an autowinder.
Auto Electroflash 128 -- a manual and auto-exposure unit using 4 AA batteries
and providing a GN of 92 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It has a hot shoe
and a PC connection. It is a very powerful unit with a tiltable head and
many other features.
Auto Electroflash 132X -- Designed for the XD and XG (and later) cameras,
the unit will automatically set the camera to the synch speed . Some find
this a neat convenience feature. Others have problems because slower shutters
cannot be selected. In fact, they can be selected, but it takes a bit of
work because you need to place tape on the secondary hot shoe contact. On
the XD, XG, and later cameras causes an LED to blink in the viewfinder when
the flash is "ready". A manual and auto-exposure unit using 4 AA batteries
and providing a GN of 105 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It has a hot shoe
and a PC connection. It sports two auto-exposure modes, and can be used as
a hot shoe unit or with a PC cord. The flash is wide enough to cover a 35mm
wide-angle lens, but an accessory wide-angle panel was available for use
down to a 24mm lens. It has a ready light, test button and has a tiltable
head for bounce flash.
Auto Electroflash 132PX -- An updated version of the Electroflash 132X, it
is designed to provide TTL exposures with cameras such as the X-700 and X-570,
the unit will additionally set the camera to the synch speed. On the XD,
XG, and later cameras causes an LED to blink in the viewfinder when the flash
is "ready". What's different about this flash is that it is designed for
TTL flash use only. It cannot be used in non-TTL auto-exposure mode and it
cannot be used in manual exposure mode. It takes 4 AA batteries and has a
GN of 105 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It has a hot shoe only connection.
It sports one auto-exposure mode with a working range up to 23 feet with
ISO 100 speed film. The flash is wide enough to cover a 35mm wide-angle lens,
but an accessory wide-angle panel was available. It has a ready light, test
button and has a tiltable head for bounce flash.
Auto Electroflash 200X -- Designed for the XD and XG (and later) cameras,
the unit created a new generation of flash units for Minolta cameras. The
200x will automatically set the camera to the synch speed when it is attached
to the top of the camera. No matter what the speed is manually set at, the
camera sets the speed to 1/60. Some find this a neat convenience feature.
Others have problems because slower shutters cannot be selected. In fact,
they can be selected, but it takes a bit of work because you need to place
tape on the secondary hot shoe contact. On the XD, XG, and later cameras
the 200X causes an LED to blink in the viewfinder when the flash is "ready".
That's nice. The 200X is a manual and auto-exposure unit using 4 AA
batteries and providing a GN of 66 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It is
a hot shoe only unit -- NO PC connection -- but it has a twist. It has two
auto modes (with working ranges up to 11 feet at f5.6 or 22 at f2.8 with
ISO 100 speed film), but it also has two manual modes! The main manual mode
has a GN of 66, but the "Autowinder" manual mode has a GN of 24. For you,
it means that you just open up the lens by three f-stops and you can use
the autowinder in manual mode. It's nice, but chances are, if you are using
the autowinder, you are probably using auto-exposure mode on the flash. It
is a nice compact, powerful unit with many features and options. Ready light,
test button, calculator with film speeds from 25 to 400, meter and feet readouts.
The flash is wide enough to cover a 35mm wide-angle lens, but an accessory
wide-angle panel was available for use down to a 28mm lens. It takes 4 AA
batteries.
Auto Electroflash 220X -- Designed like the Electroflash 200X, it is for
the XD and XG (and later) cameras. It's a little narrower and a little taller,
and takes differnt acccesories, but it generally looks the same. The 220x
will automatically set the camera to the synch speed when it is attached
to the top of the camera.
On the XD, XG, and later cameras
the 220X causes an LED to blink in the viewfinder when the flash is "ready".
That's nice. The 220X is a auto-exposure only unit using 4 AA batteries,
but it has two f-stop settings. It is a hot shoe only unit -- NO PC connection
-- but it has a twist. It has a flip-head. For you, it means that you can
trun the flash up to 90 degrees and get bounced light. It is a nice compact,
powerful unit with many features and options. Ready light, test button, with
film speeds from 64 to 400. It's main drawback is that it only works in auto
mode. It takes 4 AA batteries.
Auto Electroflash 280 -- a manual and auto-exposure unit using 4 AA batteries
and providing a GN of 92 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It has a hot shoe
and a PC connection. A very powerful unit with many features such as
Auto Electroflash 280PX -- An updated version of the Electroflash 280X, it
is designed to provide TTL exposures with cameras such as the X-700 and X-570,
the unit will additionally set the camera to the synch speed . Some find
this a neat convenience feature. Others have problems because slower shutters
cannot be selected. In fact, they can be selected, but it takes a bit of
work because you need to place tape on the secondary hot shoe contact. On
the XD, XG, and later cameras causes an LED to blink in the viewfinder when
the flash is "ready". A manual and auto-exposure unit using 4 AA batteries
and providing a GN of 92 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It has a hot shoe
and a PC connection.
Auto Electroflash 320 -- a manual and auto-exposure unit using 4 AA batteries
and providing a GN of 105 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It has a hot shoe
and a PC connection.
Auto Electroflash 320X -- An updated version of the Electroflash 320, it
is designed for the XD and XG (and later) cameras, the unit will automatically
set the camera to the synch speed . Some find this a neat convenience feature.
Others have problems because slower shutters cannot be selected. In fact,
they can be selected, but it takes a bit of work because you need to place
tape on the secondary hot shoe contact. On the XD, XG, and later cameras
causes an LED to blink in the viewfinder when the flash is "ready". A manual
and auto-exposure unit using 4 AA batteries and providing a GN of 105 in
feet with ISO 100 speed film. It has a hot shoe and a PC connection.
Auto Electroflash 360PX -- An updated version of the Electroflash 320X, it
is designed to provide TTL exposures with cameras such as the X-700 and X-570,
the unit will additionally set the camera to the synch speed . Some find
this a neat convenience feature. Others have problems because slower shutters
cannot be selected. In fact, they can be selected, but it takes a bit of
work because you need to place tape on the secondary hot shoe contact. On
the XD, XG, and later cameras causes an LED to blink in the viewfinder when
the flash is "ready". A manual and auto-exposure unit using 4 AA batteries
and providing a GN of 118 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It has a hot shoe
and a PC connection.
Auto Electroflash 400 -- a manual and auto-exposure unit using 6 AA batteries
and providing a GN of 148 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It has a hot shoe
and a PC connection.
Auto Electroflash 450 -- a manual and auto-exposure unit using 6 AA batteries
and providing a GN of 148 in feet with ISO 100 speed film. It has a hot shoe
and a PC connection.
Pocket Flash 25B -- this is a tiny flash that attachs to any of the series
200 Autopak 110 cameras. It uses two AA batteries. It is not useable on any
other cameras -- and ONLY on the 200 series, such as the 200, 250, and 270
Autopaks. See the 110 page for more information.
Pocket Flash 100 -- designed for the 460T Autopak 110 camera. It uses one
AA battery. See the 110 page for more information.
Pocket Flash 110 -- designed for the 470 Autopak 110 camera. It uses one
