MINOLTA 500mm LENSES

The 500mm appeared in one, two or three versions, depending on how you look at it.  It changed very little over time, and you will see the same results, no matter which version you purchase.   They are all mirror lenses, so it's a lot smaller and lighter than it would otherwise be.  It has a fixed aperture at f8, which provides almost no depth of field.  The exposure can be changed by adjusting the shutter speed, and Minolta includes neutral density filters in case you need to reduce the light -- and unlikely occurrence.  In fact, you'll usually find yourself wishing you had used a faster film with this lens.  On a sunny day, with the subject in full sunlight, you'll be shooting at 1/500 with ISO 100 film.

The competition

There are lots of alternative 500mm f8 CAT lenses, but most suffer from light fall-off and poor resolution.  The ones that don't, such as the Spiratone 500mm f8 (actually a Yashica lens) Minitel 77mm (NOT the Minitel-M 72mm version) cost almost as much.  Typically, the ones that try to be REALLY small are REALLY the worst.

An updated version of the MD Rokkor-X 500mm 8.0 mirror with the typical changes of the MD Minolta series, such as green distance lettering changed to orange.  One noticeable change is on the infinity mark.  On the earlier models, the lens focuses past the infinity mark, as it should on longer lenses.  On this model the infinity mark is a short line -- which points to the infinity mark.
