MINOLTA 400mm LENSES
For years there was a gap in Minolta's line-up of lenses. After 300mm its next lens was 800mm -- the earlier 600mm had been discontinued! They finally filled the gap with the new 400mm and 500mm lenses. Unlike the 500mm lenses, the 400mm lenses were not mirror optics, and allowed the shooter to change the aperture, and vary the depth of field. But Minolta knew that past 300mm, APO optics were needed in non-mirror lenses -- mirror lenses are immune from chromatic aberration because of the lens design. The super-sharp 400mm f5.6 was born.
The competition
There are LOTS of 400mm f6.3 lenses and many 400mm f5.6 lenses, but most only give decent results if they are stopped down. Some are mirror lenses, and a couple are good APO optics like the Sigma 400mm f5.6.

A new lens to the Minolta line-up of SLR lenses. It used APO optics with a fluorite element for increditble results. Combined with the Minolta 200-L tele-converter, this beauty turns into an 800mm f11 SUPER telephoto!!! |
