MINOLTA 35mm f4.0 LENSES

The 35mm f4.0 lens was a less expensive alternative to the 35mm Auto-Rokkor. It lacked the auto-diaphragm, but was much more affordable.

The competition

There are a couple of alternatives to the 35mm f4.0, but it's best to just chose a one-f-stop faster, Minolta 35mm f2.8 -- there are OVER A DOZEN to choose from!

A less expensive alternative to the 35mm Auto-Rokkor, with a slower maximum aperture and without an automatic diaphram. It is a pre-set lens with the f-stops on the lens barrel and the f-stop selector on a rotating ring with detents only at full stop settings. The pre-set control is made with a small lever on the left-hand side of the lens. The lens is so deeply recessed that a lens hood is not needed. The f-stops will not appear in the viewfinder of cameras that are equipped to display the f-stop. Unlike faster lenses, such as the MC Rokkor 35mm f1.8, where results improve as the lens is stopped down, the Rokkor 35mm f4 shows similar results at all aperture settings. The results from the Rokkor 35mm f4 are similar to those of the MC Rokkor 35mm f1.8 at f1.8 or a zoom lens at the 35mm setting -- nice, but nothing spectacular.

In 1965, Minolta came out with a series of "compact" Rokkor lenses. It was a select group of Rokkors from 35mm to 135mm that were a little thinner, a little shorter and weighed a little less than their predecessors.  The 35mm f4 Rokkor was one of these.  This model was a "compact" version of the original 35mm f4 Rokkor. The size and weight of the lens were reduced, but the optical formula remained the same.  The filter thread was dropped to a less convenient 52mm filter thread.
