MINOLTA 28mm f2.8 LENSES

The 28mm lens is considered by many to be the base wide-angle lens.  The f2.8 versions of the 28mm were considered the base 28mm.  There are several models to choose from and all are top-quality shooters.

The competition

There are a ton of 28mm 2.8 lenses out there, but most are not as sharp as these Minoltas.  Basically, you get what you pay for.  You can get a 28mm f2.8 lens for $10-20, but the results will be pretty bad -- especially when used a wide apertures and towards the edges on the picture.  Some offer closer-focusing capability or faster apertures to draw attention, but the only ones that can compete with the Minolta lenses are the most expensive ones.

A new lens to the Minolta line-up of SLR lenses in the MD Rokkor-X series. Think of it as a faster version of the MC Rokkor 28mm f3.5 that focuses closer. But it was not designed to replace the 28mm f3.5 version -- which Minolta continued to manufacture as long as the f2.8 version was sold.

The final Minolta 28mm f2.8 has the optical design changed from 7/7 to 5/5. It doesn't change the size and weight at all, and it is nearly impossible to tell apart from the earlier Minolta MD version. The front element on this model is slightly less curved and the indentation of the front plate is slightly less, but you need to physically have one in each hand to tell them apart -- and who knows if you can see the differences in the results?!?!?
