MINOLTA WIDE-ANGLE ZOOM LENSES
If you are a landscape photographer who needs to cut down on weight, such as a backpacker, one of these Minolta wide-angle zooms might be just the ticket. Unlike most of the competition, these Minolta lenses have constant apertures at all focal lengths.
The competition
There never were any other 24-35mm lenses made for Minolta cameras.
There was only one other decent 24-50mm, the Sigma 24-50mm f4/5.6, but it has a large change in aperture. There were a few other lenses in the 24/25-48/50mm range, but most suffer from barrel and pincushion distortion, and well as soft results. The one exception is the Vivitar Series 1 24-48mm f3.8. It only has 10 elements, so it's not quite as sharp as the Minolta, but if you can handle it's 77mm filter size -- and get a good deal on it -- it is an alternative. Tamron made a 25-50mm f4.0 with a 77mm thread, but it's not worth the trouble. For example, the f-stop ring rotates in the opposite direction of the Minolta lenses. You might save a few bucks, but you'll lose more than that in "pain and suffering".
